About us
Eating in a monument that tells the story of our city.
In the middle of Monnickendam's old town stands De Waegh, an imposing weighing house with a rich history dating back to 1382. The current magnificent building emerged in 1669, three years after the devastating city fire of 1666.
For centuries, this building was the beating heart of Monnickendam's trade and economy. Inside, cheese, butter and grain were weighed on the authentic balances you can still admire here. Outside, under the protective canopy, merchants from all over the region traded busily.
Over the centuries, the building was given various functions: meeting hall for the vroedschap, home of the militia and later the fire brigade. During World War I, it served as a distribution office and temporary guesthouse for the community.
The Waegh. Today
Since January 2018, twin brothers Jens & Boy Bosman have been running restaurant De Waegh. As the fifth generation of a Monnickendam hospitality family, they literally have hospitality in their blood. Their mission is clear: to breathe new life into this special location with passion and pride.
The brothers have created an atmospheric brasserie where seasonal and local products play the main role. They combine Mediterranean influences with the best ingredients from our own region, resulting in surprising and tasty dishes.
Our enthusiastic team is happy to share with you the story behind each dish. Because with us, hospitality and 'everyone is welcome' are paramount. Come and be surprised by our cuisine and the special ambiance of De Waegh!
A beautiful story from days gone by: every winter day, warm gortepap - then called 'troet' - was distributed here under the canopy to the town's poor. A tradition of caring for each other that was so characteristic that to this day Monnickendammers are affectionately called 'troeters'.
